GlobalPat is an English language collection of nearly all patent documents published worldwide. The Trilateral patent offices USPTO, EPO and JPO financed the development and translation of this database. The database contains one representative member of nearly all patent families published by the European Patent Office (EP), WIPO (WO) and national offices of Germany (DE), France (FR), United Kingdom (GB), Switzerland (CH) and the USA (US) since 1971. A worldwide search could then be completed by a search in the Technische Universität Ilmenau Patent Abstracts of Japan.

The Technical University of Ilmenau provides the Patent Information Center and On-line Databases (PATON). PATONline is the electronic document delivery service of PATON. Making it possible for all Internet users to order patent documents online. They maintain an index database with about 11 million documents; 10 million of those are accessible directly on the Internet and deliverable online (PDF or BACON/ITS files) or by mail (hardcopy).

Fees for electronic deliver are 1.80 DM per document plus 0.20 DM per page. They provide extensive coverage of full text patent documents from the following countries, DE, DD, EP, WO, US, SU, RU, BG, CS, CZ, SK, HU, LT, LV, PL, RO. The year range goes back to 1966 for the US and 1978 for the EP, WO and 1976 for DE and 1991 for most others.

PATON database provides English title pages of Japanese patent applications (without foreign priority) from 1994+ onwards. There are close to 5 Million documents in the entire PAJ database which are immediately searchable online. The database is divided into two database file sets, the backfile {1976-1993}, and the frontfile (1994+). The backfile is available only to registered users. The frontfile is available to the public.

Other databases are available to registered users, they provide access to PAJ from 1976+, PAE European Patent Applications from 1978+, DE-T2 German translations of European Patent Applications from 1992+, PAR Russian Patents from 1994+, and PAU US Patents from 1976+.
